Biologist Weed Scientist

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting biological efforts on all aspects of herbicide evaluations for crop and non-crop opportunities.  To aid in determining and expanding commercial potential of lead compounds, the individual will utilize existing bioassays, and develop and integrate new assays, to extensively characterize herbicidally-active chemistry against a broad range of weeds within key crop/non-crop segments.  The successful candidate will communicate testing results and project status with fellow scientists, project managers and management throughout the Development and Business/Marketing organizations.  The individual will report directly to the Herbicide Biology Group Leader.

Responsibilities:
  • Work safely in a team environment to support Herbicide Research and Development efforts by conducting advanced whole organism bioassays.
  • Work both independently and within a small team with a minimum of supervision.
  • Create appropriate plans to test experimental hypothesis by identification, planning and organization of resources, including space and time requirements.
  • Design and conduct moderately complex herbicide evaluations, including various application and evaluation methods.
  • Collect and summarize data and deliver results and recommendations as oral and/or written reports as required.
  • Provide input into new test protocol development and align methods with project decision goals.
  • Prepare and maintain stocks of experimental and commercial herbicides.
  • Be able to use a track-sprayer to analyze experimental herbicide formulations.

Required Education:

BS degree in Plant Biology or Weed Science with at least 3-5 years’ experience, or MS degree in Plant Biology or Weed Science with at least 1-3 years’ experience.  College course work should include, at minimum, weed science, plant physiology, weed taxonomy, weed control practices, organic chemistry, and applied statistics.

 

Qualifications:
  • Thorough understanding of laboratory and greenhouse safety practices.
  • Experience in conducting herbicide laboratory and greenhouse assays.
  • Knowledge of life histories of various weeds and crop species used in herbicide evaluations.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to use microscopes, balances, pH meter, and other laboratory equipment used in herbicide evaluations.
  • Computer skills:  Word-processing, Excel, Minitab, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work in laboratory and greenhouse, and lift 15 kg.
